TOWARDS A FRAMEWORK FOR PATIENT SPECIFIC SIMULATION OF MITRAL VALVE DISEASE

Patient-specific models in medicine offer an emerging technology for simulation of disease progression and clinical interventions. Such simulations have the potential to offer clinical decision support, and to strengthen evidence-based medical decisions. In this paper, we present a framework for patient-specific simulation of mitral valve disease, building on a clinical pathway we have developed based on data acquisition from routine echocardiography [1].
The left ventricle (LV) endocardium is obtained by segmentation of echocardiographic image data, from which a finite element model of the LV hemodynamics is reconstructed [1]. We extend the LV model with a simple data-driven parametrized model of the mitral valve (MV) opening, acting as a time-dependent inflow boundary condition in our heart left-ventricular system.
The MV model is implemented in an existing framework for patient specific simulation of the blood flow in the left ventricle of the human heart [2], replacing a simple diode type inflow boundary condition over the MV.
By varying the parameters in the MV model, different scenarios are simulated with clinical data from a single patient. Changing the parameters in the MV model enable simulation of diseased scenarios as well as clinical interventions. The flow pattern in the LV is monitored, and the results are compared with a diode type MV model for the same patient. The sensitivity of the simulation results is investigated with respect to the new inflow boundary condition [3].
