Throughout 2020, essays and interviews by researchers from social sciences and humanities were published in the press. Many of them reflected on a « post-pandemic world ». A corpus consisting of 1550 articles from the French national press and newsblog entries was collected at the MSH-ParisSaclay/CNRS and analysed using a thematic review of items imagining a « world after the pandemic ». This article highlights visions of happiness in the future, in foreign and distant countries and analyses their underlying ideas of crisis. Indeed, happiness ought to be understood as a – currently unattainable - metaphor to differentiate between the pandemic as a state of uncertainty and redefinitions of the future spurred by the pandemic itself. Past, present and future are linked via a utopic – sometimes dystopic – vision of the future, where the pandemic acts as an accelerator of the ongoing paradigms, in particular in regard to the developing world. These articles use eurocentristic strategies of othering and orientalism to construct futures scenarios of international relations.
